Rafi’s first song with Naushad was “Hindustan ke hum hain” with Shyam Kumar, Alauddin and others, from A. In 1944, Rafi moved to Bombay and contacted the famous music director Naushad, who initially used him as part of the chorus. Raga based songs and qawallis are his specialties and maybe that is why he started his career with this Music director. Rafi sahib is claimed to be one of the most versatile singers in bollywood who is the winner of Padmashri award and has won many filmfare and national awards. Naushad sahib had shaped the careers of a number of singing legends in the country including Saigal, but his association with Mohammad Rafi had marked the most golden combination. He could incorporate Western musical idioms in his compositions, and compose for Western-style orchestras. He could also easily work with Western instruments, including the clarinet, the mandolin, and the accordion. Naushad sahib received Dada Saheb Phalke award and is known for his deft adaptation of the classical musical tradition for movies. It was Rattan (1944) that took Naushad right to the top and enabled him to charge Rs 25,000 a film then. He even had to spend nights on the footpath before he worked as a pianist in composer Mushtaq Hussain’s orchestra. He moved to Bombay in the late 1930s to try his luck as a musician but had to really struggle and saw days of acute deprivation.
Since early childhood in Lucknow he was an avid listener to the live orchestras accompanying silent films. Naushad Ali is regarded as one of the greatest Music Directors of Indian Cinema. They are the Music Director – Singer duo, Mohammad Rafi and Naushad Ali.
They both together have given some of the golden songs ever composed in the industry. Today is the birthday of two legends of Indian Music industry.
